Filipino music icon Freddie Aguilar passed away on May 27, 2025, at the age of 72 due to cardiac arrest caused by kidney complications and pneumonia. He died at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City.
Aguilar, born Ferdinand Pascual Aguilar, was a pillar of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). His 1978 hit “Anak” became the best-selling Philippine music record of all time, selling 33 million copies worldwide and translated into 51 languages. The song resonated globally, addressing themes of parental love and remorse.
Beyond “Anak,” Aguilar's music often tackled social issues. His rendition of “Bayan Ko” became an anthem during the 1986 People Power Revolution, symbolizing resistance against the Marcos dictatorship. Other notable songs include “Magdalena,” “Katarungan,” and “Luzviminda,” reflecting his commitment to highlighting societal injustices.
Aguilar's influence extended beyond music. He served as the national executive vice president of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), showcasing his dedication to public service.
He is survived by his wife, Jovie, and their children. The Filipino nation mourns the loss of a true cultural icon whose music will continue to inspire future generations
